The Ozark Folk Center State Park
Broom Making Workshop

Dorothy Edwards, Broomsquire Gary, Phil Delucchi, and Carl Rauch
Gary Richeson's Broom Making Folk School Workshop had three Broom Making students, the most he will allow. The annual event was held March 21-26, 2004 at the Ozark Folk Center, Arkansas State Park in Mountain View, Arkansas. Gary is a resident of Mountain View as well. It is not too soon to enroll for next March Folk School.

The Broom Table is a very essential part of a broomsquire's equipment. Gary makes tables for the serious and future broom squires. |
Gary is holding a broom press that he made. He has three sizes. Wood material with two wheel clamps. The press flattens the broom material to aid in sowing the broom flat. |

Left is a front view of the Broom Table. Note the foot-controlled treadle for the green twine and 17 gage galvanized electric fence wire. Above are the basic tools used in broom making. Of note is the brown handled Cobbler Hammer, and two knives: a string knife and a broad bladed broomcorn knife. Other tools are common shop tools that can be found in most stores. |
